She's half of the scheming pair with Marvin Agustin in "SRO Cinemaserye's" first offering, 'Ganti.' Bilang si Eloisa, Maxene Magalona finds this role both a challenge and a natural stage in her progression sa kanyang acting. Text by Erick Mataverde. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.

During the press conference last March 19, 2009 of the weekly drama series, SRO Cinemaserye, Maxene Magalona gave us a glimpse into the personality of Eloisa. "Ako 'yung secretary ni Ms. Sheryl Cruz and isa ako na protégé niya. Gusto kong maging parang siya pero hindi niya alam [na] meron pala kaming tinatagong 'something' ni Marvin (Agustin)."

Surprises in store

Maxene's gradual shift into more daring roles has been noticeable. She further explains this change, "Well, okey lang, kasi from Una Kang Naging Akin, may ginawa na rin akong something similar to that, I really like it like that -- na gradual 'yung transition."

She explains the similarites and differences of her new show with her afternoon drama series: "And here [in SRO Cinemaserye], it’s similar to what I've done in Una Kang Naging Akin, except that medyo may pagka-kontrabida 'yung role ko here… [I’m] actually [a] kontrabida, pero with a heart. Hindi niya alam kung saan siya lu-lugar. Ganun pa rin [naman], kind of mature and magugulat pa rin kayo. I really like surprising people…Gusto ko maipakita kung ano 'yung kaya kong gawin, so sana magustuhan, kahit na magulat 'yung mga tao."

As for her co-stars, Maxene has nothing but good things to say. "This is my first time working with everyone here and sobra akong excited. My first taping day, I was with Marvin and Ms. Sheryl Cruz. Sobra akong intimidated kasi sobra silang more experienced than me. I look up to them talaga, and when I was looking at them [act], para akong in-shock, na parang feeling ko I don't belong.

"But then they made me feel so [welcome]. I learned so much from them. 'Yung acting nila talagang [is] very natural and very intense as well. There was this scene na Ms. Sheryl was crying and I could hear her, and sobra akong natakot [kasi] 'yung problem ko talaga is kung papaano umiyak on cue, and natakot ako, kasi sobrang galing niya," adds Maxene.

Her male co-star naman na si Marvin Agustin was also a revelation to her. "Si Marvin naman, we have that scene nga na sweet na sweet kami talaga. Okey naman. Very comfortable [ako sa kanya]. And he was joking pa nga na baka daw may gawin si Papa (her late father, Francis M.) sa kanya!" Maxene jokingly relates. "Pero wala naman, ganun naman si Papa. (laughs) Ever since naman, si Papa was very supportive. Actually before ko gawin ito, Papa said na excited siya na makaka-trabaho ko si Marvin kasi friend niya si Marvin and alam niya na magaling na actor si Marvin,"

A new image

Will this usher in more daring and sexier roles for Maxene? "Ang gusto ko kasi talagang mangyari is to have a balance in-between. I don't wanna go all the way there, but at the same time stay kung ano 'yung ginagawa ko in the past. I just know kasi that I'm growing up and mas fitting na mas mag-develop na 'yung image ko."

But she quickly clarifies that she still wants to take it slowly but surely. " I don't wanna leave that wholesome image kasi my Dad always told me na 'yung Lola (Tita Duran) ko, she never really had to go down that path, na kinailangan niyang magpa-sexy para lang sumikat. [So] I really wannna pursue that kind of career na gusto ko balanse lang. Ayaw ko 'yung sobra-sobra and extreme."
