She is unfeeling and tough, because that is what's needed to head a prestigious anti-crime organization. But beyond The Advocate's secret walls, Lady Q is a lady in love. She is vulnerable, irrational, and the complete opposite of her unyielding façade. Carmina Villaroel reveals her character's story. Text by Jillian Q. Gatcheco. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.
In Codename: Asero, Carmina is known as "Lady Q," her alias in The Advocate, a clandestine agency where she serves as the big boss. Lady Q is often teased by her agents that she is coldhearted and ruthless, but there are times in the show where her real emotions come out, such as when Agent Phoenix (Richard Gutierrez) supposedly died from an attack by their rival agency, The Empire.
"[Lady Q definitely has a human side]. Umiiyak din ako, may mga ibang scenes dito na pag walang tao, ipinapakitang umiiyak ako. So may reason yun behind that. Kung bakit, malalaman natin yun," Carmina explains.
She continues, "I guess yung character kailangang ganoon, e. If you're the boss and the head of [a] team, kailangan hindi ka maging sensitive, lalo na pag girl, di ba may notion na pagka girl, medyo soft? Pero kasi pag wala ako sa work, as Sandy, isa akong normal na tao. Nai-in love sa may asawa! Aaaay!"
Carmina is referring to her character's recent reunion with a past love, Ibsen Abesamis (Richard Gomez), who is actually married to Gelyn (Joanne Quintas). From the storyline, one can assume that the two had an unfinished past, and both are eager to patch up differences and possibly revive what they used to have together.
"Actually, hindi naman ako na-in love [kay Ibsen], e. To begin with, [may past na kami], so parang yung past na yun, hanggang sa present, dala-dala ko siya," Carmina says. "Basta love ko pa siya, so hindi talaga ako na-in love sa may asawa kasi [I had feelings for him] even before pa. Ngayon, kung may grudge at may ganti factor, malalaman natin yun!"
From what Carmina is saying, it looks like Sandy is just putting up a front for Ibsen so she could finally get her long-awaited revenge!
It is Carmina's second time to work with Goma in a GMA primetime series the first being MariMar, where they were also paired. How is it like the second time around?
"Ay, it's really fun!" she shares, saying that since she and Goma go way back to their Palibhasa Lalaki days, they really do get along well. "Yung ngayon kasi, siya yung pinaka-comfortable kong ka-eksena."
Isn't it weird that she played Goma's younger sister before, and now, they're playing lovers?
"Ay, nangyari na, e!" she exclaims, laughing. "[Naging] mag-kuya na, mag-ama na, mag-boyfriend [na]! So it’s really magaang. Magaang siya makatrabaho."
What can viewers look forward to in Codename: Asero?
"Marami pang mangyayaring twists, revelations, [at] syempre, yung action scenes. At hindi mawawala yung drama at kilig!" Carmina shares.
