Jolina Magdangal’s 20 years in show business prove that she is doing what she was destined to do. A singer, actress, host, entrepreneur and Pinoy Idol judge, she shines in just about everything she ventures into. That is why “Destiny” is a fitting title for her third album under GMA Records. Packed with 10 unforgettable love songs ranging from soothing ballads to electronica-sounding upbeat pop songs, the album reveals not only Jolina’s romantic side, but also a preview of what most people don’t know about her. Go with the flow!

There are three English revivals in this album, with “Will of the Wind” as the carrier single and theme song of her upcoming movie, I.T.A.L.Y. (I Trust and Love You), produced by GMA Films. In this opening song, Jolina’s steady voice rises over heavy piano, accompanied with guitar and drums. Singing with the confidence of her years in the field of music, her rendition is a testament to her “befriending the will of the wind.” This is why she keeps her head high in an industry filled with up-and-coming talents.

starsWhen asked about the inspiration behind the song’s music video, Jolina answers that the message is for people to just “go with the flow” and let loose once in a while. Maybe this is one of the reasons why she chose to liberate her rocker side in this album!

Siguro sa susunod na album, six or seven songs out of 10, puro rock na. Dito, intro pa lang. Pero nilagyan na namin ng pictures.”

The rest of the lineup

starsIn “When I Fall in Love,” Jolina takes out the somber tone from the experience of falling in love with an upbeat rendition that can almost make the listener dance. She also does this in her version of Fra Lippo Lippi’s “Stitches and Burns.” She shares her sentiment about these songs: “Yung ‘When I Fall in Love’ gusto ko talaga yan, kasi feeling ko ganyan naman talaga dapat! ‘When I fall in love it will be forever!’

Among the tracks in the album, “Pangako ng Puso,” “Umibig Ka,” and “T’wing Kasama Kita” have the simplest lyrics, which Jolina successfully utilizes to convey heartfelt messages of love—the central theme of this album. “Hanggang Kailan” is a soulful ballad, and Jolina’s voice echoes with questions about the persistence of love and its accompanying hopefulness.

Also noteworthy are “Isang Taon” and “Buksan ang Iyong Puso.” In both songs, there is a sense of coming back to a place or a person where the singer can only find true joy and peace.

Although Jolina writes her own poetry, she has never attempted to put them to music.

A more mature sound

When asked about how her musicality has grown since her first album, Jolina replies that she has matured as a singer.

Pa-tweetums. Ine-emote mo talaga yung kanta!”
