Bianca King has a wish—that she be seen as someone who’s more than just the kontrabida. And to make sure that wish becomes reality, Bianca says she’s treating each role she gets as an audition for the next. Text by Jason John S. Lim. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.

The Stylish Kontrabida

“That’s not how I dress talaga,” Bianca King explains of her character. Known to wear more comfortable clothing when not taping, Bianca says that she feels her character can sometimes go over the top when it comes to her choice of clothing.

stars“She makes sure that people would take notice of her.”

But Bianca has no complaints. In fact, because she’s playing a model, Bianca even hired a stylist—“para we’re also able to talk about what kind of outfit I’d need for a particular scene, and if I’m comfortable wearing it.”

“I wouldn’t let her wear anything na hindi ko rin gusto,” she finishes.

The actress admits that she’s not very knowledgeable on what’s the most girly thing to wear. “In normal days, medyo boyish ako, medyo vintage tsaka laidback.”

Bianca’s Challenge

Bianca is no stranger to playing kontrabidas. But unlike other artists, Bianca is one of those who ends up in the grey area—not good, but not completely evil either. So, she reveals, when she learned that she would be playing Betty, she was excited.

stars“When I found out I was going to be in Dyesebel, this wasn’t the first role that was said that I was gonna play.” Bianca reveals that she was supposed to play a mermaid character, but the powers that be decided to give her a promotion—by giving her legs instead. “When they decided to give this role to me, that’s all that mattered—

“That they entrusted the weight of this role to me.”

“I feel like maybe I was doing something right in my previous roles,” she adds. Bianca explains that she treats all her roles as her audition for her next role, “so if I’m able to do justice to this—to this being great kontrabida, that’s what the press say—hopefully naman, with my next role, I can try something new.”

Aiming for Something More

Bianca defends that she loves doing kontrabida roles, “it’s like second-nature to me now; I’m so used to it, parang no-brainer na siya to me.” And this is why she wants to do something completely different, something that’s truly challenging for her.

“Like being mabait,” she offers. “Mas nacha-challenge ako sa ganoon eh. Kasi hindi ko pa alam, if I’m playing a mabait character, if it comes out realistic sa screen.”

starsIf it were up to her, she’d love to play an inaapi for her next role. “[Because] I’ve turned out to be a crier eh,” Bianca reveals. She adds that she can make herself cry in less than five minutes. “I’d love to do a character that has a lot of crying, has a lot of drama—

“But it still has to be offbeat.” Biana says for an actress like her, the ones with strong features, purely inaapi wouldn’t be believable—even if their features get toned down through make-up. “Hindi [kami] pwedeng totally nagpapaapi, [na] totally innocent—[the character] has to have this edgy side.”

She admits that she’s very hopeful that this can happen—especially now that the network has begun experimenting with such roles through Bakekang and Magdusa Ka. In fact, she uses Katrina Halili’s role as an example, “because she’s also played a kontrabida—and she also has quite a strong face, so hopefully.”

“Hindi naman ‘I’m next’,” The actress is quick to follow, saying that for now, she’d very much appreciate just being considered for future roles that are edgy protagonists. “Feeling ko, I’d be ready for it, [that] maybe I have enough experience under my belt already to handle something new like that.”

For now, Bianca will continue to make Dyesebel’s life miserable as the mean-spirited Betty on Mars Ravelo’s Dyesebel. Don’t miss any episodes, weeknights after Codename: Asero, part of GMA Telebabad.
