The pressure is on for Nadine Samonte to not just deliver one of the most memorable performances by Ms. Dina Bonnevie but also to prove that she is not a mere second choice for a plum role first offered to Jennylyn Mercado. Text by KC M. Abalos. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio and GMA Network.
“Nakakabigla,” Nadine recalls. This was her initial reaction when she heard that she will replace friend and confidante, Jennylyn Mercado for the lead role in the television remake of Maging Akin Ka Lamang.
The Sinenovela was, according to iGMA sources, written with the real life couple Jennylyn Mercado and Patrick Garcia in mind to play the lead roles. After two days of taping, it was apparent that Jen, given her condition, would not be able to handle the many incredibly physical “beatings” the role calls for. The production had to choose someone who can rise up to the challenge as swiftly as possible. Deadlines need to be met after all. Enter Nadine.
There is no doubt that she is the right choice. She and Yasmien Kurdi share the limelight on daytime television. With Nadine’s rendition of Hilda Koronel’s character in Kung Mahawi Man ang Ulap, she has proven that she can hold her own on the acting stage. But she reveals to iGMA that her first concern was to make sure that Jen was okay with the deal.
Jen’s Blessing
“Nagtetext kami, sabi ko sana tinuloy mo na lang,” Nadine shares but when Jen answered that it was too risky. Nadine had no choice but to agree.
With her former Supertwin’s blessing, she begins to feel more comfortable in the project. The young actress then gets down to business and immerses herself in the role of Elsa, a simple hardworking girl in love with a man across the ocean. What she needs to do now is to come to terms with the fact that this is another classic character which she has to portray with as much passion as Ms. Dina Bonevie.
This is her most mature role to date. Is this twenty-year-old girl ready to play a woman who will be lovestruck, victimized, and will constantly be torn between her lover and child?
“Nandito na po ako eh. Sayang ‘yung opportunity, sayang ang work. So, ready na po ako.” She says with a confident smile.
