It has been four years since Jaya released a new album, and loyal fans and music enthusiasts alike have been waiting far too long. But now, it’s time for a cool change. Text by KC M. Abalos. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio and GMA Records.

starsThe long wait is over. The Queen of Soul has just come out with a new album entitled Cool Change. Jaya believes that this is a very apt title track because there have been many changes in her life lately—she has gotten married, changed record labels, and has a new manager. She also became a mom.
“Maraming nagbago sa buhay ko. There’s this rush of blessings. Cool change!” she says with a content smile. Then she adds that being a mom is the coolest change that has happened to her.

It is no surprise then that she recorded a song especially for Sabria, her daughter—the very poignant Kenny Loggin’s original, Cody’s Song. It is also Sabria’s launch as a recording artist. In the track, her cooing can be heard as a complement to her mom’s strong but sweet voice.

The Launch

In an intimate album launch at Circle Café with the members of the press, Jaya answered questions about the more controversial changes in her life. Why did she change record labels?

stars“It was just God’s will saying you don’t belong there anymore. You need to get out and be with people that will really know how to treat you,” she answers bravely. In the middle of this explanation, the audience was surprised to see the usually jovial Jaya teary-eyed.

“I have people around me right now who love me, like the people from SOP.” As an example, she narrates how Direk Louie Ignacio (SOP and SIS) volunteered to do a music video for her, for free. After thanking the people who were instrumental in the production of the album, she also answered the question as to why she did a revival album, especially since she is known for her original hits.

“Ako lang, gusto ko lang na magkaroon ng sarili kong version. Na alam ko, on my part, I can give it my own flavor,” she says. “This is just the time to do a revival album with people you trust.”

Lastly, what kind of Jaya is represented in Cool Change?

She replies, “An adult contemporary artist. I think it’s very important na my audience realizes na nag-mature na rin ako.”
