Francis Magalona is known to be a man of many hobbies and interests. He is known as a master rapper, an award-winning photographer and most notably as a favorite host on lunchtime variety show Eat Bulaga. Now Kiko gives us a glimpse of what life is like on Eat Bulaga where his castmates are more like family than just co-workers. Text by Alula Love M. Dela Cruz. Photos by Mitch S. This November Francis “Kiko” Magalona will be celebrating his tenth year anniversary as a mainstay host of the hit variety show Eat Bulaga, the forty-three year old veteran entertainer seems to be happy with his current disposition on the show “Eat Bulaga is family, I don’t have any written contract with them its just all word of honor. I don’t need a contract to be with family.”
According to Kiko being a host of a daily show like Eat Bulaga requires discipline and passion, “You really have to be dedicated, it’s like a cross between public service and entertainment.” He also adds that variety shows aren’t just for pure entertainment it actually has deeper purpose especially to those who have become patrons through the years, “We have to understand that the only thing that stopping people from a civil war or being mad from poverty is laughter, I believe Eat Bulaga plays a very important role.” For two solid hours the world stops and all are tuned-in to the punchlines and the excitement that Eat Bulaga brings to its loyal audience.
It’s no wonder that the show has already lasted for almost four decades and has no signs of going off the air. Kiko assures the show's fans that “It’s really fun and I can’t imagine it closing shop.”
Aside from discipline, another important component of noon-time variety hosting is having fun. Kiko is a firm believer that in order for someone to authentically have fun, they need the right people around them, “Sila Joey (De Leon), bossing (Vic Sotto), Wally (Bayola) they’re always having fun.”
It was also through Eat Bulaga that Kiko was able to meet his closest friends to date. “Sila Michael V. he’s my best friend, I’ve bonded closely with Pia (Guanio) of course sila Ruby (Rodriguez) kumare ko yan. It’s really nice.”
Being close to his fellow co-host has its benefits. He admits that as the wild boy, he pretty much gets away with murder, “I’m the one who’s always instigating things, I’m the alaskador. May minsan may pikonan.”
But like any family, every mishap is quickly forgiven and forgotten, “Para sa akin I feel na marami ako natutunan sa kanila tsaka yung mag jokes yung mga bonding, fashion, pag-kain, ang sarap ng samahan.”
With this amazing set of people and an amazing timeless show, we can all vouch that Francis Magalona will also be there to entertain us, “I’m inspired by Joey De Leon he said he’s going to work till he dies I wanna do that to I wanna work till I die.”
