A self-confessed supporter of the Philippine National Red Cross, Tim Yap joins Celebrity Duets, with the hope of winning the cash prize of one million pesos. The only eventologist-host-writer-editor-endorser-entrepreneur in the Philippines, Tim found his niche by becoming the authority on events and the Filipino urban lifestyle. This time, being subjected to the test in front of national television via the reality-singing competition Celebrity Duets, Tim swears that he will do his best to conquer yet another endeavour.
Conquering Singing
During the press conference of Celebrity Duets last August 6, Tim Yap unabashedly admitted that he does not sing.
“No (I don’t sing)! Actually, sobra akong kinakabahan kasi never pa akong sumasali ng contest sa buong buhay ko, much more a singing contest. I’m always a judge, I’m always a host. For the first time I going to subject myself in these waters.”
He says that he is doing this to accomplish one of the things he needs to do before he grows old and that is to sing in front of an audience.
“Do you remember the movie, Heart and Souls? Iyong parang from a soul he went back to earth just to be able to sing in front of an audience. Alam mo iyon? Parang mayroon akong check list sa buhay ko ng mga kailangan kong magawa before I mature and go to my old age - just to be able to sing in front of an audience,” explains this multi-hyphenated man.
And so he did. Singing Ricky Martin’s "She Bangs" and Queen’s "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", Tim proved that he can carry a tune or two and wow the audience with his enthusiasm and performance.
Red Cross Supporter
“The main reason why I joined Celebrity Duets is because I’m a volunteer for the Philippine National Red Cross. Hindi lang siya cause parang it’s just more of an advocacy and a cause. Kawang-gawa ko. Parang ito na 'yung give back ko. I’ve been blessed in my life so ito na 'yung way ng pagbabalik ko.”
He promises to give all his winnings to the Philippine National Red Cross should he wins the one million peso grand prize. But just in case he gets eliminated during the run of the show, Tim believes that he has still managed to achieve something that might otherwise be only a dream.
A truly remarkable guy, his parting words sums up the collective feeling of the eight celebrity contestants. “Be kind to us because we’re not singers and enjoy the show as much as we enjoy doing it.”
